Our Neighbourhood

Else Kuala Lumpur is housed in a beautifully-restored 1930’s historical building, also known as the Lee Rubber Building.

Embedded in the heart of Chinatown in downtown Kuala Lumpur, the property is surrounded by a bustling and vibrant neighbourhood, rich in heritage and culture. In recent years, the coincidence of nostalgia and charm in the area has attracted a burgeoning community of local artisans and creatives who have set up businesses in the precinct.

A mere 5-minute walk away lies the tranquil industrial-chic amalgamation of a restaurant, wine lounge, coffee bar co-working space, newsagent & bicycle rental shop. The bright semi-open space is housed in a former brothel and includes a breezy courtyard and a quirky combination of exposed brick and pastel furnishings and tiles. Tea culture, drinks and Asian inspired soul food are all taken seriously here.

Once one of the most iconic and largest theatres in Malaysia was Rex Theatre, later a backpackers hostel, the building has burnt down twice, and been put to use in various guises including a karaoke outlet over the years. It is now being brought back to life by Malaysian architects, to create a community-led cultural space for independent businesses, artists and entrepreneurs. You might find a flower market, pop-up bars and food stalls, or live acts as the space continues to develop.

Another spot to hide away from the busy streets of the city, Merchant’s Lane is a cafe serving fusion-style brunches and carefully crafted tea and coffee. Think pesto green curry pasta, an Asian twist on hash & eggs, or an Italian chow mien with rendang. Rattan chairs, colourful cushions and plants climbing the exposed brick walls make for a delightful hidden nook to spend an afternoon.

Located next to Merchant’s Lane is a cocktail bar founded by award-winning bartender Angel Ng. PS150 upholds much of the building’s pre-war character and divides the bar into distinct areas – the Opium Den, an outdoor courtyard and a dark and romantic main bar area. The cocktail menu spans from vintage to modern libations, reflecting the evolution of the art of the cocktail in eras from Vintage (1850-1910) to Contemporary (2000-now).
